In this post we are going to show you how to return your Kindle Fire HD to complete stock as if you just bought the tablet. This is for users who may have rooted their Kindle Fire HD and installed Play Store or other modifications. This is not for users who have installed a second bootloader and other rom like CyanogenMod. You may want to do this in order to sell your tablet or give it to others. Regardless we are going to show you the process.
First, these instructions are for Windows devices only. You’ll need to grab a few files and install them before beginning the process. You need ADB, Fastboot, KF Restore Tool, and latest Kindle Fire firmware. Download the required files from the link below.
ADB and Fastboot – Download and install
KFHD Restore Tool – Download latest version and unzip
It is very important that Kindle drivers are installed properly. Visit the following page and follow the instructions under prerequisites. Then install the following KindleDriver on your PC with the Kindle unplugged. Enable ADB on your Kindle then plug into the computer and wait for installation.
Navigate to the folder where you installed the ADB and Fastboot. Hold down Shift and right-click on the folder then choose “open command window here”. In the command prompt type “adb devices”. If you see a set of numbers like the pic below then adb drivers are setup correctly. If not then drivers where not installed properly.
Now in the command prompt type the following: adb shell su -c “reboot bootloader”. You Kindle will now reboot and go in to fastboot mode. On your Kindle you will see a black screen with the words fastboot.
Now we need to fix the drivers in fastboot mode. Go to your device manager and you will see the Kindle with a yellow triangle. Right-click and choose update driver. On the next screen pick “browse my computer for device software” and then “let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer”. Find and choose the Kindle on the list and on the next screen choose the “adb composite interface”. Now the drivers are fixed.
Navigate to the folder where you unzipped the Kindle Fire SRT Tool and double-click on “SR Tool” file. Choose option 1 for “Restore-Factory Rooted with Superuser.apk”. Be patient as it’s very important. The file transfer can take up to 5 minute with no progress notification. If you interrupt the process in any way then you will BRICK your device. After the transfer is done then choose option 4 to “Erase cache and userdata”. Once it’s finished then choose option 6 to reboot.
The device will reboot and will take a few minutes to load the stock software so be patient. Once you are in the Amazon software then transfer the latest Kindle Firmware to the root internal storage. Do not put in any folder. Go to your setting in “Device>About” and tap the “Update Your Kindle”. The device will now reboot and install the latest firmware.
Once you device boots then you should have a complete stock Kindle on the latest firmware with no root or modification. You can remove your Amazon account and even factory reset although not necessary. Now you can sell your tablet or just start with a fresh stock Kindle.
