Kindle Fire Software Update

It looks like Amazon is rolling out a new update for the Kindle Fire HD 7″, 8.9″, and 2nd generation. This is update is mostly minor but does include battery percentage in status bar which is pretty nice. They are also adding Canadian English and French language support as well plus bug fixes. You should receive the update automatically as long as your battery is above 40% charge. You can try to force the update by pulling down your status bar and tapping the sync button. Otherwise you can manually update as well using our instructions below. Beware that the update will break root so be sure to follow our guide before updating.

The update will break root but if you have already installed the Google Play Store then it will be there and continue to function as usual. So if you are rooted but haven’t installed the play store then I highly recommend following our instruction here before updating. But it’s not all that bad as the orignal root process still works on this new update. So if you want to root this update again then just following our guide here.

In order to manually update, first you need to download the appropriate software for your specific Kindle Fire device. Be aware that the file sizes are near 600 mb for each file.

Kindle Fire 2nd Generation: update 10.4.1

Kindle Fire HD 7″: update 7.4.1

Kindle Fire HD 8.9″: update 8.4.1

1. Connect your Kindle Fire to your computer via USB connection.

2. Transfer the appropriate file to the internal storage. Do not copy to any other place or within any folder.

3. Pull down the status bar and go to the +more. Under Device >About and tap the Update Your Kindle.

4. The device should reboot. If it doesn’t then manually reboot the device.

That’s it and now your are update to the latest version. In order to the show the battery percentage, go to setting under Device and and check the Show Battery Percentage in Status Bar.
