Earlier this year Amazon introduced their virtual coin system called Amazon coins. You can use this coins to purchase games, apps, and in-app purchases for your Kindle Fire in the Amazon Appstore. Today those coins are now available in the U.S. and Amazon is giving every U.S. Kindle Fire users 500 coins which is worth 5$ in value. More coins can be purchased at Amazon.com/coins with discounts of up to 10% for bulk orders.
The use of the coins is definitely an attempt by Amazon to keep you more in their eco-system. That’s the battle that’s going on these days with Amazon, Google, and Apple. As a Kindle Fire user this might be appealing specially if you are buying lots of things from the Amazon store. For occasional users I’m not sure it’s the best way to go. But it may be that developers might change their pricing based on whether you purchase with coins vs your credit card. That definitely could sway user to switch to using coins. Time will tell how this new Amazon coin system is going to workout. Let us know what you think about the new coin system.
