Official Google Calendar App for Android 4.03 and Up

Google just resealed their official Calendar app in the Google Play Store for all Android devices running 4.03 and up. Previously it had been only available for Google Nexus devices or pure Android phones. Most other phones have their own built-in calendar from the manufacturer like Samsung or HTC. But now everyone can enjoy Google’s simple calendar app synced with all their calendars.

The Calendar app has been optimized both for phone and tablet. This may be a good example of Google’s attempt to demonstrate how apps can work for phones and yet be tablet optimized. This is definitely a goal for Google since recently they published their guide to tablet optimized apps. I think this is long overdue and I’m glad Google is now taking this issue head on.

In the tablet version you have an extra window pane on the right which always shows the month and the list of calendars. Also when you touch a calendar event it shows as a pop-up rather than taking you to a new screen. Touching anywhere outside of the pop-up removes it. Agenda view also differs on the tablet with a right-side pane that displays events details. This is a great simple app with a clean UI that I really like. The app info does mention that there are some issues on HTC devices so be aware of that. And yes I’m going to Android BBQ this weekend so if you’re going to be there be sure to say hello.
