NFL 2011: NFL.com Official App (Update: NFL ’12)

Football season is back and just in time NFL has released an update to their mobile app. A great NFL app for your tablet can be the key to keeping track of your fantasy football and following out of market games. Let’s take a look and see what the NFL 2011 mobile app provides.

I found this app to be fairly more basic than I expected. The initial screen shows a scrolling scoreboard with a smaller column on the side for game schedule, video, NFL news, and your team news. The scoreboard is really great with a large and colorful font for the teams and scores. Clicking on any game takes you to a more detailed page that shows plays and stats. This is the strength of the app in that it shows the football field with visual markers for plays that can be clicked for more info. The smaller column on the right shows more detailed stats about players and the game. This is really useful for following a live game and the best part of the app.

Where the app is lacking tends to be pretty much everything else. Going to the video section brings you to a video page that shows what seems to be random NFL videos. There is no way to look at different video categories like game highlights which would be very useful. Beyond the video section, you can only access NFL news and your team news. What’s missing and I think crucial to an NFL app is the lack of pages for stats, teams, and standing. I have also found the app to be buggy on my Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1, causing a force close quite often. Overall I think the NFL 2011 app is mediocre at best and could use an upgrade soon to provide more rich features.
