The latest 7.4.3 update for the Kindle Fire HD broke the ability to change the wallpaper when you use an alternative launcher. This was pretty bad as you just have a black screen. Probably Amazonn’s attempt to get people to use the default launcher. But this is Android and we turn out tablets into what we want. That’s exactly what Colby D was able to accomplish and he has kindly written up the procedure and is sharing with Android Cowboy. So if you’re tired of that black screen then try the procedure and free yourself. And be sure to thank Colby through his Twitter account (https://twitter.com/chubbs258).
First of be sure your kindle is rooted and ES File Explorer and Superuser are installed. You will also need Google Play installed on your rooted kindle. This first app you will need to download is Kindlefree from the Google play store. You will need to use this to install an alternate launcher to prevent issues with the notifications bar disappearing. (I use apex launcher and the following instructions are written specifically using that launcher).
Open kindle free select the launchers button and click apex launcher (this will install the apexlauncher.apk). Follow the instructions that are given in regards to the default launcher. Once that is done, Reboot. Once rebooted, you will now be able to select your new launcher. Note: If you are planning to change lock screen (below) I would suggest not setting it as default just yet. Check to make sure that launcher is now a system app with permissions set at RW R R (it should be automatically set ready).
Next (I have edited some of these instructions from here to simplify it.)
Step 1: Download Live Wallpaper Picker(Dropbox) or Live Wallpaper Picker(Ubuntu One). Save LiveWallpapersPicker.apk to your desktop (or using es file explorer download on your kindle, which is what I did).
Step 2: Download AppWidgetPicker-1.2.3(Dropbox) or AppWidgetPicker-1.2.3(Ubuntu One). Save AppWidgetPicker-1.2.3.apk to your desktop (or using es file explorer download on your kindle, which is what I did).
Step 3: Using Windows Explorer, move AppWidgetPicker-1.2.3.apk and LiveWallpapersPicker.apk from your desktop to Kindle/Internal Storage/Download
Step 4: Using ES File Explorer, launch ES File Explorer (open root explorer select Mount R/W and make sure path and system are set to RW.
Step 5: Using ES File Explorer with Superuser permissions. Move AppWidgetPicker-1.2.3.apk and LiveWallpapersPicker.apk from /sdcard/Download to /system/app.
Step 6: Next long press on /system/app/LiveWallpapersPicker.apk select Permissions. Change the permissions to User: Read Write Group: Read Others: Read
Step 7: Next long press on /system/app/AppWidgetPicker-1.2.3.apk select Permissions. Change the permissions to User: Read Write Group: Read Others: Read.
Reboot the Kindle. Be sure Enable ADB is On.
Next you will need to download and unzip the Stunts Wallpaper Fix from here. Once you have unzipped it. Plug your kindle into your computer and select the runme file from the folder you just unzipped. Select option 1 and allow the program to run fully before you unplug. It should reboot. Next go to the Google Play store and download a live wall paper. Open the app and you should see set wallpaper click it and then select it on the next screen and click set wall paper. You should now see your new wallpaper and enjoy.
