In general over-the-air (OTA) updates for your Kindle Fire or other devices are great. This allows the manufacturer to easily push updates to your device that will add functionality and get rid of bugs. But let’s face it, in reality it doesn’t always happen that way. Sometimes updates actually adds bugs or in many cases causes battery drain. Also, if you have rooted your device then in most cases you will lost root after the updates. So there are definitely times when you would prefer not to get the updates and choose on your own. Today we’ll show you how to easily disable the Amazon update for your Kindle Fire HD tablet.
First thing is that to disable the OTA updates root is definitely required. That’s not a big deal as its’ very easy to do and we have a guide walking you through it. Once you have root then you’ll need a file explorer app and I recommend ES File Explorer and my directions are based on it. Now you are set to go. Instructions are below along with a video guide.
- Using ES File Explorer app, navigate to the /system/etc/security folder.
- Rename or move the otacerts.zip file.
That’s it and you will no longer receive OTA updates. I recommend keeping a copy of the otacerts.zip file on your sdcard in case you want to put it back and receive updates again. You can also manually update by downloading the update file from Amazon and copying it to your sdcard. This way the updates are in your control. Let us know if you have any questions or comments.
