Seesmic: Facebook and Twitter Social App Updated

It’s been a while since Seesmic got a refresh but today the app was finally updated in the Android Market. The app supports multiple accounts for Facebook and Twitter and brings with the update minor bug fixes, support for t.co links and fixes issue with trending topics. This is one of the only few social apps also available on the Amazon Appstore although it has yet to be updated on Amazon. But we assume that the update should reach Amazon Appstore soon and if you are impatient there is always the option of sideloading the app.

One of the best feature of Seesmic is the support for multiple accounts on Facebook and Twitter. This obviates the need to use multiple apps for different social application which most people maintain these days. Seesmic actually dropped support for Google Buzz with the update which makes sense and nobody is going to complain about that. Adding accounts is simple and involves the usual in-app sign in and authentication.

The Facebook UI is simple but fast and very functional. At the top are tabs for News Feed, Friends, Pages and Wall. When scrolling down you can go back to the top by touching the top red bar. This is not obvious at all but the app does let you know about this feature the first time you use the app. News feeds can be tapped to view more details along with comments. Pictures can also be viewed but for some reason they are displayed in very small size. Profiles and Walls for you and friends can be viewed along with their friends and pages. The pages tab displays both your created pages and pages you like. This is an important feature for me since I have multiple FB pages to maintain. Overall the Facebook features of Seesmic are simple, fast and functional.

The Twitter UI for Seesmic is similar to Facebook and other apps with tabs for Timeline, Replies, Messages and Profile. Touching a tweet takes you to a detailed page with hyperlinks for hashtags, @usernames, and external links. There is also a display bar for the number of retweeted which links to all retweeted users. Tweets can be replied, Retweeted, Retweeted with Comment or shared via other apps. Profiles both for you and other can be viewed with the typical info and options for Reply, Direct Message, Unfollow, Block and Report Spam. There is option for viewing lists and trending topics. The search function includes users and option to save. The app does provide some options in look and feel along with photo, video, and URL shortening services.

There is no particular wow factor with the Seesmic app but it provides a very simple and functional app. A lot times that tends to be better than an app with fancy UI that tends to be slow and lacks in function. This is also the only option on the Kindle Fire for an app that supports multiple social accounts. The only other option for the Kindle Fire is to install both TweetCaster and FriendCaster or stick with the mobile version of the social sites. This is assuming that you are not rooted or sideloading apps. Regardless, I think Seesmic is a very good option as a social app and hopefully they will continue to update and support it.
