Shadowgun is the highly anticipated action & shooter game by the makers of Samurai II: Vengeance, Madfinger Games. The game is optimized for Nvidia Tegra 2 devices only and let me tell you that it doesn’t disappoint. I had previously thought that Gameloft’s 9mm HD was the best shooter game on Android but now there is a new king in town. Shadowgun has stunning graphics and absolutely sets the standard for how high quality games should look and feel on a tablet. I played this game for 2 hours straight and had to force myself to stop in order to start my review. So lets get to it.
The game takes place in the year 2350 where you play the role of John Slade, the galaxy’s most infamous bounty hunter. Corrupt corporations rule the galaxy and you’ve been hired to hunt Dr. Edgar Simon with the assistance of S.A.R.A.(Slade’s personal android assistant). The game begins when you crash-land on a planet and then the fun begins.
The graphics in this game are amazing and approaches PS3/Xbox games with smooth gameplay. The controls are simple with just the joystick, shoot, and reload. A nice feature is the “free move pad” which means that anywhere you touch in the corner of the screen becomes the joystick and moves the character. I found that this method made the gameplay much easier compared to other games.
As you move through the game you can hide behind barricades and objects allowing you to dodge fire and shoot back. Along the way you fight many different types of enemies. The standard enemy is the genetically-enhanced humanoids that shoot and also hide behind barricades. You have ground attacks in cyborg-spiders that approach you and detonate, so you have to kill them before they reach you. There are huge stationary robots that have missive firepower. In the air, there are stationary guns in the ceilings and flying cyborgs planes. At the end of the level you get to fight the big boss that comes in different shapes and sizes. It will take more than just good shooting to make it alive as tactical maneuvers and positioning becomes important. You really have to play to experience it all as my words won’t do justice.
I had a lot of fun playing this game and I’m sure you will as well. I would say that Shadowgun has to be one of the top 3 Android games and a must have for any game enthusiast, specially considering it’s low $4.99 price. You just can’t get a high quality game like this at such a low price. I hope more games at this high level are developed to make Android tablets a great gaming platform. We have to thank the Nvidia Tegra 2 chipset and hope that the new Tegra 3 will push the platform even further. I hope you enjoy this game and let us know what you think.
You can download the app for $4.99 from the Android Market.
