When Google announced Chromecast last month it was a huge hit. It immediately sold out online at Google, Best Buy, and Amazon with all retailers currently having a 3-4 week wait period. The popularity was due to the low price of $35 and that it turns any TV into a smart TV. You can use the Google apps like YouTube, Google Music, Google TV, and with a touch of a button cast the video on your TV screen. It’s a great solution and due to its open source many other apps are adding functionality. But the device is nowhere to be had. Luckily there is an alternative with CheapCast.
CheapCast will turn any Android device that the app is installed on to behave like a Chromecast reviever device. So you can for example install this on your tablet then push any YouTube videos to the tablet. If you tablet is connected to your TV via HDMI plug then in essence it will behave much like the original Chromecast.
But the app is in beta and is not a finished produc. Thus it is not guaranteed to work with all devices and currently it will not cast Google Chrome tabs. But with that being said it’s worth testing out the app and seeing how it works on your device. You can even try installing the app your Google TV although some of those functions can already be performed on Google TV. I’ll be testing it on my new Nexus 7 and even my Revue Google TV. Give the app a try and let us know what you think.
