Read It Later now called Pocket
Tablets are great way to consume news and browse the web when you have internet access. If your like me, then you have a WiFi only device since I could never understand signing a contract for a tablet. You save a lot of money, but there is the pesky problem when you are on the go without WiFi access. So what’s the solution if you want to read articles and webpages while traveling or commuting? The Read It Later app has your answer with offline saving and sync across all your devices.
Read It Later has three major features that makes it a great app for offline viewing of articles and webpages. First, you can sync across all your devices which includes your computer. This way you can save articles during the day on your computer and read them later. It’s compatible with all browser like Chrome, Firefox, Opera and more. Great for people who commute daily on public transportation and want to use their tablets to read articles or while on the plane traveling.
Second, Read it Later is incorporated in many apps like Pulse, News 360 and many more which makes saving easy. Simply use the share button on any web page or article in an app then choose Read It Later. Unfortunately, the app is not integrated with Google Reader but you can save articles using a custom link which can be saved. But, there are other RSS readers that do integrate Read it Later. In most cases, saving articles is only a click away in your browser or mobile app.
The third feature of Read it Later is how it saves articles for offline viewing. There is the option for Article View or Full Webpage. You can let the app decide which view is better although I found that it tended to mainly use the Article View. You can also decide which view is automatically saved with either or both option. The Article View extracts text and images which are rendered to fit your device similar to an RSS reader. I always prefer this format for reading as it’s simple and fast without all the webpage distractions. The Full Webpage saves as is except for videos which are not available offline with your mobile device. If you are connected to the internet, then a Redownload of the article in either format is possible.
Other features include sharing articles to social sites, email or other apps like Evernote. Search, sort and tag are possible and a must have once you build a larger collection. Article font type, size and alignment can be adjusted along with a night mode reading (white text with black background). Overall, many features that make Read It Later a great app for offline reading.
